Composition and Film Music

Composition and Film Music

Under the guidance of composer Béatrice Thiriet, the School’s film music composition class offers an innovative training program, allowing students from diverse backgrounds to adapt their compositional practice to visual media. This unique program is designed to help students explore the relationship between music and visual storytelling, preparing them to work on film, television, and video game projects. The class encourages a creative and technical approach to composition, providing tools to understand the emotional impact of music on imagery.

Students develop essential skills for composing music for visual media, working across various genres and collaborating with other creators. The program is rooted in a contemporary perspective on musical creation, allowing students to express their artistic sensitivity while refining their technical abilities. They are trained in writing scores tailored to the demands of the film industry while exploring innovative approaches.

The School’s composition classes also serve as a hub for exchange and collective creation. Through a partnership with Ensemble Variances, students have the opportunity to have their work performed and heard by the public each year—an essential experience for any aspiring composer. This allows them to assess the impact of their music on a professional ensemble while participating in outstanding concerts that showcase their creative work.

At each level, supplementary teaching units are offered, some mandatory and others optional, depending on the chosen curriculum. This flexibility allows students to tailor their educational path while meeting the discipline’s high standards. Study equivalencies may also be granted, enabling students to receive recognition for prior training and experience. With top-level instruction and concrete collaboration opportunities, students in the School’s film music composition program are fully prepared for careers in the contemporary music industry, whether in film, television, or digital media composition.
